I use IM like crazy for my day to day admin tasks, I get everything from notifications from my servers, to supporting clients, to very sensitive business transactions. So keeping things private is important to me. I've been looking for a well tested, peer reviewed encyption mechanism for gaim to support my privacy needs, and I believe Ive found a really good system with gaim-encryption. This is a plugin to gaim, and once installed, handles managing your GPG keys on the back end, and negotiating key exchanges on the front end.
If you haven't started using gaim yet, you should. Its GPL'd, works on everything (linux, osx, and that... whats it called OS... windows?) its free, supports AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, IRC, and most importantly, TABS (tabs in gaim, mozilla, xchat, vmware, and gnome-terminal... must... have....tabs). The gaim-encrypt plugin uses the mozilla encryption libaries, which are peer reviewed, fast and you're already using them for your SSL webservers. Unlike clients like trillian which doesnt. (There are a lot of ways to do encryption, there arent a lot of ways to do it right).

Heres a screenshot of gaim in action, The red lock means that my traffic is outbound encrypted, and the inbound traffic is not (since I hadnt recieved anything yet). And yes, that really is how I use my desktop. Thats not staged (I get this question a lot from windows people for some reason) :)

Try it out sometime, gaim-encryption will encrypt over any protocol (ICQ, AIM, MSN, etc) Im at:
AIM: farmicus
ICQ: 6996966
MSN: scott@gotroot.com
