I don't typically get into Anime that much, but A) I have a Tivo and B) I kind of dont have a real job. So, I watch a lot of Adult Swim and I ran across Fooly Cooly (FLCL) last week (or as it sounds "Flee-Clee!"). What can I say about it other than Its excellent. In a really screwed up "we must be loosing something in the translation" vespa powered attack-guitar that pops out of your head kind of way.
Fooly Cooly is a 6-episode story, so its not like you've got to invest major parts of your life to watch the whole thing. Plus, if you have a Tivo (or better yet, MythTV, time of day and channel kind of become meaningless, you can just blast through all 6 episodes in a couple of hours.
Its about an elementry school kid, who has guitars, robots, giant hands, and monsters pop out of his head. Not like in an imagination kind of cute way, more like a pop-culture cacophany of cool stuff kind of way. Rest assured, most of the time you wont get it. I sure didnt, but its so screwed up you cant stop watching it. The collective "WTF!?!?!" after each episode from my co-habitator and I lasted for a good 10 minutes. Thats a good sign.
